Set to become effective on May 25, 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a European Union (EU) regulation that will strictly govern the ways in which organisations collect, manage, and store personal data. According to the GDPR, personal data is any information related to a natural person (or “data subject”) that can be used to directly or indirectly identify the person. If an organisation handles data belonging to data subjects in the EU, it must comply with the GDPR, regardless of its location. The primary aim of the GDPR is to empower people in the EU with more control over their personal data and to strengthen their privacy rights.
